Chinese Vice-Premier Meets With US Trade Officials

Chinese Vice Premier Wu Bangguo met US Trade Representative Charlene Barshefsky and Secretary of Commerce William Daley in Davos Saturday on the sidelines of the 30th annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF).

During the meeting, Wu recalled that China and the US reacheda win-win agreement last year on China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO). He urged an early approval by the US Congress to grant China the status of permanent normal trade relations.

Barshefsky and Daley said President Bill Clinton and his administration had made active efforts for reaching the agreement last year and are now trying their best to grant China the permanent trading status.

They expressed the hope for an earliest possible conclusion of China's bilateral talks with other WTO members, such as the European Union (EU).

Wu told the US officials that China is actively engaged in these talks, which have been going on smoothly.

He said that China is ready to conclude all talks with concerned parties based on the spirit of mutual understanding and flexibility. (Xinhua)
