Sichuan Province has built an expressway network in western China, believed to be the largest of its kind. The length of the network now opened to traffic is 800 km with Chengdu, the provincial capital. Last year, Sichuan earmarked 7.84 billion yuan (945 million US dollars) for building four expressways linking Chengdu with Ya'an, Leshan, and Shuangliu International Airport, and between Neijiang and Yibin, a total length of 348 km. To date, Sichuan has connected Chengdu with Chongqing, the largest municipality and industrial center in western China, and with neighboring Guizhou and Shaanxi provinces and the Tibet Autonomous Region. Moreover, the province also is speeding up construction of expressways linking Chongqing with Guang'an and Dachuan, and with Nanchong and Dujiangyan cities. |
