Heavy Snow Causes Traffic Problems in East China

Heavy snow beginning January 24 morning has affected transportation in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province and a key city on the main artery connecting Beijing and Shanghai.

The Nanjing-Shanghai Expressway was forced to close January 24 afternoon and many flights from the Lukou International Airport in Nanjing were delayed.

Passenger ships arriving at the port of Nanjing were also late.

The slippery roads in the city also affected pedestrians and caused traffic jams, and local hospitals received more than 60 emergency fracture patients who had fallen on the icy streets.

Local sources said that transportation is expected to return to normal in the city.

In the city of Jiujiang in neighboring Jiangxi Province, heavy snow caused the closing of a major bridge on the Yangtze River, and it is still unclear when the bridge will be reopened.
