Young people who are well educated and have a relatively high monthly salary comprise a significant proportion of China's Internet users, according to the China Netizen Poll. The poll found that China's Internet is a "young person's Net" and dominated by professionals whose work has to do with the Intenet. The number of teenage students (19.3% of China's total Internet users) who are online is greater than teachers (5%) and Communist Party cadres (3.4%) combined. There is not much much difference in the number of Internet users whose monthly salary is below 500 yuan and between 500 to 1,000 yuan. It is unclear how many of the respondents who said they made less than 500 yuan a month were students who still rely on their parents. But Internet users who make between 1,000 to 2,000 yuan a month account for 28% of China's Internet users while people with a month income of 2,000 to 4,000 yuan account for 15%. Only 5.8% of people whose careers are related to business or trade use the Internet despite e-commerce being one of the main functions of the Internet. According to the poll, enterprises only account for 11.3% of Internet users while personal users make up the rest. Of the websites set up by enterprises, 85% of them have had no or little change since it first went online. But 90% of the have pictures of the company's products and the president of the company. The main barriers to Internet access in China are slow Internet access, high costs and a lack of knowledge about the Internet. |
