Doi Reelected as Japanese Opposition Party Leader

Social Democratic Party (SDP) Chairwoman Takako Doi on Friday easily won another two-year term as leader of the Japanese opposition party, as no challengers emerged by the deadline for filing candidacy earlier in the day, party officials said.

The reelection marks the second time Doi has been elected unopposed to two-year term since 1996, when she became the SDP head at the request of the then party leader Tomiichi Murayama. Doi was also SDP chairwoman between 1986 and 1991.

Her new term will start in late February, when the SDP holds its party convention.

In a statement released following her reelection, Doi pledged to lead her party to victory in the next House of Representatives (lower house) general election and put an end to the rule of the Japanese coalition government formed by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), the Liberal Party (LP) and the New Komeito party.
