US Assistant Secretary of State Karl Inderfurth January 20 held talks with Pakistani Foreign Secretary Shamshad Ahmed on nuclear non-proliferation and regional security.

"The discussions held were a part of regular bilateral consultations between the two countries," said a Foreign Office statement issued after the talks.

Several areas of global and regional importance including nuclear non-proliferation, regional security and the recent developments in South Asia with special reference to Kashmir,Pakistan-India relations and the Afghan issue were covered, said the statement.

Inderfurth, who arrived here Thursday on a three-day visit, briefed Shamshad on the just-concluded US-India dialogue in London.

Shamshad stressed "Pakistan's policy of restraint and peace in the region," emphasizing the importance of peaceful resolution of all outstanding issues between Pakistan and India with the Kashmir dispute in particular.

Reaffirming Pakistan's opposition to terrorism, Shamshad said that "Pakistan itself is a victim of terrorist acts sponsored from outside which have increased in the recent months."

The discussions also focused on Afghanistan and Pakistan's recent peace efforts.

Inderfurth is scheduled to call on Foreign Minister Adul Sattaron Friday.
