Tibetan Antelope Poachers Arrested in Qinghai

Rangers in west China's Qinghai Province have handled four major cases involving poaching of Tibetan antelope and arrested 10 poachers since late last month.

According to officials with the local forestry bureau, officers also confiscated 700 fur pelts, over 2,000 rounds of ammunition, four rifles and five jeeps in separate actions during the past 20 days.

On December 23, police arrested three poachers, seized 110 fur pelts, two rifles and two jeeps used by poachers who sneaked into the Hoh Xil Nature Reserve. The reserve, located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, is home to more than 20 state-protected animal species including the Tibetan antelope.

On January 12, rangers from the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous prefecture seized seven Tibetan antelope poachers during a patrol of the reserve. They seized some 100 furs, two jeeps, two rifles and over 1100 rounds of ammunition.

With a rise in poaching cases in the area since late last year, local police and forest rangers have strengthened their crackdown on the illegal activities.
