China plans to modernize its housing construction industry over the next ten years in two phases, according to an official with the Ministry of Construction.

Liang Xiaoqing, deputy director of the housing industrialization office of the Ministry of Construction, revealed the plan at a seminar on real estate strategy, recently concluded in Guiyang, capital of Guizhou Province in southwest China.

He said China will work hard in the first decade of the 21st century to improve the quality of housing projects, establish a standardized system for the use of building materials, and ensure energy-saving and high-tech applications in housing construction.

By the year 2005, housing projects should satisfy people's primary demands, and a comparatively standardized building material system should be in place, according to the plan.

Apartment buildings by then are expected to consume 50 percent less energy and increase the application of science and technology to 30 percent.

By the year 2010, buildings should satisfy people's demands for long-time and comfortable living, according to the plan, and building materials should be standardized and its supplies socialized. By then, energy consumption will be reduced by another 30 percent and technology application increased to 35 percent.
