China's Young Stars Shine at World Cup Swimming

Up-and-rising Chinese star Yang Yu became one of the three swimmers who took two golds on the opening day at the FINA World Cup short-course meet Hong Kong leg Saturday.

Powerhouses China, most of them are youngsters, scooped 6 out of 17 gold medals, while Canada collected four golds, Australia two and the other five golds went to Hungary, the United States, Indonesia, Italy and Poland respectively on the first day of FINA World Cup short-course meet Hong Kong leg.

Fourteen-year-old Yang Yu, who became a Chinese national team member one year ago, was crowned in the women 200-meter free (1:57.96) and 50-meter free (25.86), respectively.

"I'm not satisfied with my results today," said Yang, who has won two golds this week at the World Cup Shanghai leg.

"Clinching a berth into the Sydney Olympic Games is my main goal this year," Yang added.

"Yang is one of the few potential youngsters on our team, " said Chinese team leader Xue li.

Yang's compatriot Xie Xufeng, who completed a hat-trick at Shanghai leg, won the men's 400 meters medley with a time of 4:16.66.

He was titled also in men's 100-meter medley in a time of 55.55.

26-year-old Australian Simon Leighfield won two golds in men's 200-meter and 50-meter breaststrokes, timing 2:15.54 and 29:40 respectively.

In the women's 50-meter backstroke, Canada's Erin Gammel beat her compatriot Kelly Stefanyshyn to clinch the gold, timing 28.86.

Stefanyshyn then beat Gammel to take the crown in the women's 200m backstroke in 2:11.31.

Hungarian Bela Szabados repeated his win in Shanghai days ago, winning in the men's 100m freestyle with a time of 49.03.

Indonesia's Wisnu Wardhana surprised the pool by winning men's 50-meter butterfly in 24.65.

American Chad Carwin beat Szabados to win the men's 400 meters free in a time of 3:45.49.
