China is "seriously concerned" about reports that US president Bill Clinton will approve large-scale sales of advanced weapons to China's Taiwan out of the political consideration of America's general election, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao said on January 6. The Chinese government and people have always firmly opposed the sale of advanced weapons to Taiwan by the US government, andthis stance is "clear and consistent," Zhu reiterated at the regular press conference. The US government is obliged to honor its commitment and act strictly in accord with the Joint Communique issued by the two governments on August 17, 1982, and terminate immediately sales ofadvanced weapons to Taiwan, he stressed. |
