The Port of Shanghai handled 186 million tons of goods and 4.21 million TEUs (twenty-feet equivalent units) of containers in 1999, both new records. These figures increased at double-digit rates over 1998. According to the latest statistics, the port accommodated 24,600 overseas and domestic vessels and handled 60 million tons of import and export goods last year. The Port of Shanghai has greatly expanded business now that it is connected with a modern transport network involving highways, water routes, railways, and air travel, authorities say. The century-old port now has 286 berths, including 93 capable of accommodating 10,000-ton class vessels. |
