South Korean President Kim Dae-jung Saturday outlined five goals for his nation this year when the dawn of the 21st century and the new millennium has broken.

The five goals are realization of national unity, completion of national reform, realization of a society of new intellectuals, a march toward a first-rate economy and promotion of cooperation with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, said Kim in his new year's message to the South Korean people.

Kim said South Korea is standing at a new starting point with big dreams and hopes and South Korean people are equipped with qualifications such as a high level of knowledge and cultural creativity.

"It is said that well begun is half done. Our future in the 21 st century depends on how we begin this year. That is why we set five goals for our national policy for this year," said the president.
