Acting Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to the breakaway Chechnya republic on Saturday to award medals to Russian soldiers who are fighting rebels there.

A live television coverage showed Putin in Gudermes, east of the regional capital Grozny, encouraging soldiers to fight for an intact Russian Federation.
