"University City" In Northwest China

A "university city" will be set up in Xi'an, capital of Shanxi Province in northwest China, in response to the central government's decision to enroll more college students for next year.

Covering a total area of 400 hectares, the "city" will be spread over four separate areas in suburbs in Xi'an. Dormitories, entertainment centers, educational and logistics service facilities will accommodate about 100,000 students, said local officials.

At a recent national working conference for the higher education next year, Zhang Baoqing, the vice minister of education said that China will increase college enrollment quotas in the next three years. More educational opportunities will be available for China's youth.

There are more than 200,000 students in 42 universities in Shanxi. The "university city" is expected to resolve inadequate boarding and lodging facilities. Some predict that the university will also create more business opportunities for Xi'an.

Public tendering for the project has been approved by Shanxi educational departments. Local colleges will adopt a modern enterprise system to manage the "university city".
