The "China Centenary Bell," the largest bronze bell in China, was installed on December 22 at the square of the China Centenary Temple compound in western Beijing. The bell, which weighs 50 tons, was completed on December 17 in a workshop at the Capital Iron and Steel Plant and was transported to the square late last night. To hold the giant bell, a nine-meter-high pavilion covering an area of 200 square meters was built at the square, and the steel pavilion was painted white to match the buildings of the China Centenary Temple, China's only monumental structure for the new century. The bell will be used to usher in the new century and is inscribed with scenes of historical importance in China over the past century and the Chinese national anthem. |
