Stronger China-US Ties Benefit Both Sides: Li Ruihuan

Visiting Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Li Ruihuan said Tokyo over the weekend that China and the United States have no fundamental conflict of interests and that developing bilateral relations will benefit both countries.

On the whole, Sino-US relations have been developing arduously, Li said in an interview with Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK).

Li said the reaching of an agreement between China and the US on China's accession to the World Trade Organization will promote bilateral economic and trade cooperation, help improve Sino-American relations and inject new vigor and vitality into the world economy.

Li said China hopes that the US strictly abides by the three Sino-US joint communiques and relevant commitments, so that Sino-US relations can continue to develop and improve.

Li said China's major tasks presently are to promote productivity, strengthen the overall national strength and improve the living standard of the people, and that China needs a long-term peaceful international environment and is willing to develop friendly relations with all countries, including the United States.

Li charged that recently the US government, by distorting facts, criticized China for its handling of the issue of Falun Gong, which is actually an evil cult, and even took so-called sanctionary acts against China. These moves have constituted serious violations of norms governing international relations and wanton interference in China's internal affairs, he said.

Li urged the US government not to take further acts to hurt the Chinese people's feelings, and not to set up new obstacles against the development of Sino-US relations.
