Jiangxi Province in east China has recently taken measures to ban the excessive hunting and trading of migratory birds living in Boyang Lake in a bid to ensure the safety of wildlife which winters there at China's largest freshwater lake. Broad water areas, abundant grass, and suitable water temperatures and climate have made Boyang Lake a haven for nearly 10,000 migratory birds of many varieties every winter. Included among them are a dozen rare birds. Boyang Lake has also become a tourist destination and research base for Chinese and overseas visitors and ornithological experts and scholars. Local forestry, industrial and commercial, and public security departments have been urged to enhance their sense of duty and make joint efforts to protect the migrant birds of Boyang Lake. Moreover, work is also required to further increase the awareness of locals to protect wildlife and ensure the preservation policy. Jiangxi has just launched a campaign across the province to protect the local wildlife, which will last until March 2000. (Xinhua) |
