Under the aegis of the China Committee 2000, China will celebrate the new millennium with a spectacular celebration at the Great Wall.

Called "Anticipating The New Century", "The Giant Dragon Spurts Fire": China's Millennium Celebration, the even will be held from Jiayuguan in northwest China's Gansu Province to Laolongtou in Shanghaiguan.

Celebrations will kick off with a Chinese Music Millennium Cocktail Party "Farewell to the 1999 at Sunset", in Jiayuguan hosted by the China Committee 2000 and the Jiayuguan Municipal Government.

At 20:00 Beijing Time, 2,000 people will begin to play drums and cymbals. The sound of drums will be heard along 20 beacon towers and ancient passes which will symbolize the past 20 centuries, up to Laolongtou in Hebei Province.

Observatories around China will report on the new millenium. A gun salute marking the end of the 20th century will be the highlight of the celebration.

At 23:59 Beijing Time, people attending the celebration will pray for world peace for one minute.

Foreign media and Chinese TV stations will broadcast the celebration live across China and around the world.
