China plans to build three more projects on the Yellow River to control floods and discharge silt washed into the river. A complete water control system will be built to monitor and control floods at Longyangxia, Liujiaxia, Sanmenxia reservoirs and a Xiaolangdi water control project. The Xiaolangdi project is to be completed by 2001. Since 1949, China has already established 12 reservoirs on the 5,464-km river, with a combined installed capacity of nine million kilowatts. The planned Guxian and Qikou reservoirs will be located at Hukou at the middle reaches of the river, discharging about 40 billion tons of silt together with the Xiaolangdi project each year. |
