Li Lanqing Meets Senior Cuban Official

Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said that the Chinese government and people cherish the friendly and cooperative relations with Cuba. Li made the remarks in talks with Carlos Lage Davila, vice- president of the Council of State of Cuba and secretary of the Executive Committee of Cuba's Council of Ministers.

He said that the visit by Lage, an old friend of the Chinese people, will further promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.

He noted that Sino-Cuban relations have entered a new phase of steady and comprehensive development in recent years, especially after President Jiang Zemin's visit to Cuba in 1993 and President Castro's visit to China in 1995.

Speaking on the economic and trade relations, Li pointed out that in recent years, economic cooperation between the two sides has expanded, thanks to the joint efforts of entrepreneurs of the two countries. He added that China is willing to develop trade and economic relations with the Cuban side on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Li expressed thanks to Cuba for its suport in China's possible entry into the WTO and said China will continue to support Cuba in its struggle to safeguard independence and sovereignty and oppose outside interference.

Li also briefed the Cuban guest on China's economic situation.

Lage said that the Cuban government values its ties with China, and expressed his thanks for the support the Chinese government and people have offered to Cuba over the years.

Lage said that Cuba has achieved significant economic growth this year and the living standard of the people continues to be improved despite some unfavorable conditions.
