China will build an ecological demonstration area in Hulun Buir League in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region to strengthen environmental protection in this area, according to local officials. Known as China's "clean green land," the Hulun Buir League has a diversity of natural resources including huge grassland areas, forests, wetlands, and hundreds of rivers and lakes. There are also more than ten national-level nature reserves in the league including the Hulun Lake Nature Reserve which is home to 199 species of rare birds. In the forest area of the Greater Hingan Mountain Range there are also some 3,000 species of birds and 76 varieties of wild animals, 12 of which are on the top national protection list. But recent years have witnessed worsening ecological conditions in the area owing to desertification and water pollution, and local officials said that creating the demonstration area will contribute to the ecological balance in northern and northeastern China.
