Li said that China and Japan are neighboring countries and they should continue their friendship for generations. He called for governmental and non-governmental efforts in both countries, including efforts from the press, to help achieve the goal.

As one of the largest newspapers in Japan that has international influence, Yomiuri Shimbun should strive to promote mutual understanding between the two countries, Li said.

Li reiterated the hope that Japan would abide by the principles set in the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the bilateral treaty of peace and friendship and the bilateral joint declaration, and strengthen bilateral cooperation in all fields.

"It not only acts for the interest of both peoples, but benefits regional and world peace and stability as well," he said.

Li also answered questions on Japan's relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and the issue of Taiwan.

Shoichi said that now that the elder generation who first built the friendship between Japan and China have passed away, the younger generation should carry on their will to promote the friendship. He promised that Yomiuri Shimbun will use its advantage to contribute to the relationship.
