Tuesday, December 07, 1999, updated at 13:48(GMT+8) China Southern Part of Beijing-Guangzhou-Zhuhai Expressway Opens The Guangzhou-Zhuhai section of the Beijing-Guangzhou-Zhuhai expressway was completed and open to traffic on December 6 to mark the coming handover of Macao to China on December 20. The Beijing-Guangzhou-Zhuhai expressway, a key state project, will be the only one of its kind connecting the Chinese mainland with the Macao Special Administrative Region. The Guangzhou-Zhuhai section starts from Tanwei in Panyu and ends at Jinding in the city of Zhuhai. The section is 53.8 km long and costs about 4.6 billion yuan. Construction of the section began in August 1997, with fund from the Guangdong Provincial Highway Construction Co. Ltd. and a Hong Kong partner. The section has six lanes and a speed limit of 120 km per hour. The eastern part from Tanwei to Nanlang in the city of Zhongshan has only four lanes and a speed limit of 100 km per hour. The Guangzhou-Zhuhai section is designed with no crossings and is equipped with two emergency phones each kilometer along the road, which is monitored by a video network. The expressway links Guangzhou, the provincial capital of Guangdong, Shenzhen and Zhuhai and Hong Kong and Macao.
