Installation of the first nuclear island in the third phase construction of the Qinshan Nuclear Plant in east China's Zhejiang Province began on November 29. The 450-ton eduction appliance, heart of the No.1 heavy water reactor, was moved into the workshop of the reactor by the 23rd company of the China Nuclear Industry Group under the guidance of Canadian experts this morning. This was the first time China has installed an eduction appliance in a heavy water reactor. The experiment demonstrates that the installation is presently up to all designed requirements. The third phase of the nuclear power plant is being built in collaboration with the Candu Technology corporation of Canada. Two 700,000-kw Candu (Canadian Deuterium Uranium Reactor) generating units imported from Canada will be installed in the reactor. The plant, which will have a generating capacity of 1.456 million kilowatts, will begin operations in February of 2003. (Xinhua) . |
