Sino-Portuguese JLG Reaches Consensus on Key Issues

Chief representatives of both sides of the Sino-Portuguese Joint Liaison Group (JLG) reached consensus on two key issues concerning Macao after a 2.5-hour meeting in Macao on November 29.

One issue is about the detailed arrangement of stationing Chinese troops in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) as soon as China resumes the exercise of sovereignty over Macao on December 20 this year.

The other issue is related to the official use of Chinese and Portuguese in the SAR.

Han Zhaokang, chief representative of the Chinese side of the Sino-Portuguese JLG, and his Portuguese counterpart Santana Carlos expressed satisfaction with their achievements at the meeting.

They said the achievements would be favorable to resolving the remaining questions in Macao's transitional period and ensuring its steady transition and smooth transfer of power.

However, the two chief representatives did not reveal the details of the issues.

"The fact that both sides reached consensus on the two issues demonstrates the friendly cooperation between China and Portugal in handling the questions concerning Macao," Han Zhaokang said.
