An earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale struck Chengjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province at 00:40 on November 25, killing one person and injuring three others.

But tourism facilities near the epicenter were not affected, according to an official.

The epicenter was reported to be at Longjie Town and a scenic spot, not far from Chengjiang, the site of a Cambrian Period geological formation dating back 500-570 million years. The quake was felt in the provincial capital of Kunming, 60 kilometers from the epicenter.

Three jolts ranging between 1.4-2.7 on the Richter scale were recorded by 01:00 am this morning.

A postman named Ruan who was on duty last night said, "I felt the house shaking continuously. Many people ran into the street."

The Provincial Seismological Bureau has sent a work team to the spot and Communist Party and government officials of Chengjiang County have rushed to the affected area for rescue and inspection activities.

"The earthquake did not harm tourist facilities at the Fuxian Lake scenic spot. Hotels there remain intact," said Zhang De, director of Chengjiang Bureau of Tourism.
