An "Olympic Truce" will be observed during next year's summer Olympic Games as the resolution had been adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday in Lausanne of Switzerland. The UN urged member states to observe the truce which is entitled "Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal." It was cosponsored by 180 nations and regions, including the five permanent members of the Security Council China, France, Russia, Britain and the United States. The resolution, introduced by Australian world swimming champion Daniel Kowalski, is intended to revive an ancient Greek tradition of ceasing hostilities during the Olympic Games. The resolution calls on all member states to observe and promote a truce during the Sydney Games from September 15 to October 1, 2000. |
