Chinese Police Seize 1,518 Kilos of Drugs in Fujian

Police in east China's Fujian Province smashed 3,957 drug-related cases and detained 4,946 people suspected of committing drug-related crimes during an intensive anti-drug campaign launched in the past two and half years.

According to local sources, police confiscated 1,518.18 kilos of drugs during the campaign initiated in 1997, including 226.3 kilos of heroin, 951 kilos of the drug known as "ice", and 79 kilos of opium.

Twenty-six cases involve people from Taiwan engaged in making or trafficking drugs, and 77 Taiwan residents were detained suspected of committing drug-related crimes, with the seizure of 492.29 kilos of drugs and the destruction of 10 drug-making nests financed by Taiwan traffickers.

At the same time, effective measures were taken to step up registration of drug addicts and stress drug rehabilitation.

Now, four special drug rehab centers have been established in the province to help addicts become free of their habit, said local sources.
