Chinese Leaders Call for Efforts to Boost Economy

Chinese premier Zhu Rongji has called on various localities and departments to earnestly implement the economic policies and strategies set by the central government, in a bid to spur economic growth.

He made the call in a letter to the National Planning Conference which concluded in Beijing on November 23. Vice-premier Wen Jiabao attended the meeting and urged planning and pricing departments to take earnest measures to complete necessary tasks raised by the Central Economic Working Conference held recently.

Wen said that the most important economic task facing China is to expand its domestic market. He urged the State Development Planning Commission to take advantage of the funds obtained from China's treasury bonds.

The funds collected through debt bonds should mainly be invested in infrastructure projects and technology, the vice- premier said, stressing the quality of these projects and strict control of the funds.

The vice-premier called on the related departments to strengthen and improve economic control and set up an effective mechanism to coordinate China's planning, finance and banking departments.

Wen noted that pricing policies are important in conducting macro-economic control which should be focused on boosting and optimizing economic growth.

He urged relevant departments to employ pricing policies to expand the domestic market and stimulate consumption. One of the central government's policy is to accelerate the development of the western region.

The vice-premier urged the State Development Planning Commission to work out plans for economic key tasks set by the Central Economic Working Conference and give priority to the development of infrastructure facilities, environmental protection, economic reforms, science and technology and education.

He urged planning departments to reform their working habits and conduct investigation and economic studies based on the facts.

Participants at the Planning Conference discussed the report delivered by Zeng Peiyan, minister in charge of the State Development Planning Commission.
