Chinese Premier Meets HKSAR Chief Executive

Chinese premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing on November 21 that the Central government is pleased with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government's performance in the past year and pledged continuing support for Hong Kong's development.

Zhu briefed to Tung on the economic situation on the mainland and said that China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) will also provide new opportunities and favorable conditions for Hong Kong's sustained economic development.

He said the mainland will always support Hong Kong in times of difficulties and ensure stability and prosperity in the region. The Central government is full of confidence in Hong Kong's future.

State councilor and secretary-general of the State Council Wang Zhongyu, and director of the State Council Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office Liao Hui were present at the meeting. (Xinhua)
