Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji told visiting Burundi President Pierre Buyoya that as an old friend of China, Buyoya's current visit will further promote mutual understanding and friendly bilateral ties. Zhu made the remarks while meeting with Buyoya in Beijing on the morning of November 19 at the Great Hall of the People. Zhu spoke highly of bilateral ties, saying that cooperation between the two countries in political, economic, health and educational fields has been fruitful. The two countries continue to support one another and cooperate closely, the Chinese premier said. Moreover, he expressed appreciation for the importance the Burundi government gives to developing relations with China and its adherence to the One China position. "China has consistently advocated that all countries, large or small, rich or poor, strong or weak, are equal members of the international community," Zhu pointed out. On the relationship with Burundi, Zhu said China always sticks to the principles of mutual respect and understanding, equality, and non-interference in internal affairs, and offers political and economic support, fully demonstrating the sincere and selfless friendship of the Chinese people for the people of Burundi. "We hope to make concerted efforts with Burundi to further consolidate and develop China-Burundi ties," he said. On economic cooperation, the Chinese government encourages Chinese enterprises to invest overseas, especially in Africa, and carry out cooperation with local enterprises by various means, Zhu said. Buyoya agreed with Zhu's remarks, and again extended gratitude for the support and assistance given by the Chinese government and people in Burundi's time of need. He also reiterated his country's support of China's just stand in the international arena. He told Zhu that the further development of Burundi-China ties meets the common aspirations of the peoples of both countries, and said he hopes the two sides will explore new cooperative means geared to the new environment for the further growth of bilateral ties. Zhu, in return, expressed appreciation for the efforts made by the Burundi government under the leadership of Buyoya to strive for social stability, economic development, and the improvement of people's lives. Buyoya congratulated China people on the great achievements they have realized in all fields under the leadership of the Communist Party of China. China's experience demonstrates that developing countries can well develop, so long as they maintain stability, he said. |
