1,400-Year-Old Stone Sculpture Found in South China

Chinese archeologists have found a stone sculpture of Guan Yin, the Chinese goddess of mercy, dating back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-581), in Guilin, the famous tourism city in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

This rare relic was discovered at a construction site for an urban park, according to one archeologist.

The sculpture, 1.7 meters high and 1.5 meters wide, was carved with delicate artistry featuring Guan Yin's kindly expression and graceful manner.

The discovery will be valuable for the study on the city's history and culture in ancient time, the expert said.
