Visiting Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar rejected the continuation of the Helms-Burton law on November 16 which is affecting the Cuban economy.

Aznar, who is attending the 9th Ibero-American Summit, said at a press conference that the Spanish government rejects totally the imposition of penalties against third party countries, as is done under the Helms-Burton law.

This law states that any company from any country may be sanctioned if it is discovered as having some form of investment in Cuba, or also if the company is perceived to be doing trade with Fidel Castro's Cuban government.

The Spanish Prime Minister is staying at the Hotel Melia-La Havana, which belongs to the Spanish hotel chain which has been sanctioned by the US, under the Helms-Burton law.
