UN Team in Afghan Capital to Seek Safety Pledge

A UN team arrived in the Afghan capital of Kabul on November 16 to secure safety guarantees from the Taliban after various attacks on the UN offices in major Afghan cities over the last few days.

The UN coordinator for Afghanistan, Erick de Mul, told the media upon his arrival that he would meet senior Taliban officials and establish contacts with the militia, according to a report reaching here from Kabul.

Several UN buildings across Afghanistan were attacked with stones and one office in Fahar, in the south, was torched by angry crowds on Monday.

Thousands of protesters have been demonstrating against UN sanctions imposed on Afghanistan on Sunday because the Taliban refused to hand over alleged terrorist Osama bin Laden.

Bin Laden has been charged in the United States with the bombings of the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August last year in which 224 people died.

The UN Security Council passed a resolution on October 15, giving the Taliban 30 days to hand over Osama. Otherwise sanctions would be imposed on the Taliban.
