China Launches First Mobile Multimedia Research Lab

China's first laboratory for mobile multimedia research and development was founded on November 16.

The lab was co-created by Ericsson, China Mobile Telecom Corp., Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.

The lab will help Chinese Internet service providers (ISPs), IT hardware and software vendors and academic institutes to upgrade local mobile communication applications and services to the third generation (3G) technologies, said Michael Ricks, president and CEO of Ericsson (China) Co.

The 3G technologies include three key technologies such as general packet radio service (GPRS), wide-band code division multiple access (WCDMA) and wireless application protocol (WAP), he added.

The lab will focus on the research and development projects of analysis, simulation, development and testing on wide-band mobile multimedia services for the Chinese market, he said.

It will also help develop new mobile Internet business applications, and mobile services for industries like banking, finance, transport and retail.

As a world-leading supplier of mobile infrastructures, Ericsson has set up 3G experimental systems in Canada, Japan, Germany, Italy, Britain, Sweden and the United States. (Xinhua)
