Thomas Enqvist became the first Swede to capture the Stockholm Open three times on November 14 when he routed fellow Magnus Gustafsson 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 for the winning title. Enqvist, ranked seventh in the world, improved his head-to-head record with Gustafsson to 6-2. "I played good tennis today and hit the ball really well," said Enqvist, who won titles here in 1995 and 1996. "I'm glad to be the first Swede to win here three times." The title was the 16th of Enqvist's career and his third success in four 1999 finals. He recorded his first victory in Adelaide and then reached the Australian Open final a week later, only to lose to Russian Yevgeny Kafelnikov. He beat Richard Krajicek in the final three weeks ago in the super-9 event in Stuttgart, where earned him a trip to the year- ending ATP world championship in Hanover. The round-robin tournament for the world's elite eight players takes place from November 23 to 28. (Xinhua) |
