Chinese Agro-scientists Make Major Progress in Hybrid Wheat

A new strain of hybrid wheat has recently been cultivated and seeded on a large scale successfully in east China's Shandong province.

The new hybrid strain was developed by Prof. Chen Huimin of Shandong University and his colleagues after 25 years of experimentation, using the world-level technology of cellular amalgamation.

Sources said that the wheat output exceeds 500 kg per mu (7,500 kg per ha). The protein contained in the new wheat seeds reaches 17.7 to 20 percent.

Experts of the Chinese Academy of Sciences believe that the new wheat will be free of some difficulties involved in normal breeding and greatly shorten the period of breeding. (Xinhua)
