United Nations offices in at least three cities in Afghanistan have become the target of demonstrations protesting against the imminent imposition of UN sanctions against the Taliban, a U.N. spokesman said on November 11 U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said the protests began Wednesday in the southern town of Kandahar, where a large group of demonstrators led by a "mullah" and assisted by Taliban vehicles equipped with roof-top speakers hurled stones at the UN offices, causing considerable damages. There were no casualties reported. On Thursday, similar demonstrations, described as large and vocal but peaceful, took place in the western town of Herat and Fahra. Again, no casualties were reported and no other details were immediately available, the spokesman said. Sanctions are set to be imposed by the UN Security Council on Sunday if the Taliban does not hand over terrorism suspect Osama bin Laden. |
