Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi are optimistic that Africa can be free of war in the year 2000, Radio Uganda reported on the evening of November 11.

During his three-day visit to Libya ending Thursday, Museveni exchanged views with Gaddafi on the conflicts in Somalia, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Both leaders expressed optimism that Africa can end the wars on the continent by the year 2000, a year of peace declared by the Organization of African Unity.

Museveni commended Gaddafi for the efforts he had made to coordinate the relations between Uganda and Sudan.

Gaddafi praised Museveni for his contributions to the peace process in the DRC, especially the Sirte agreement signed by President of the DRC Laurent Kabila and Museveni in April.

Museveni said that he was glad that Libya has emerged out of sanctions and therefore has the opportunity to develop the country economically and politically.

The Ugandan president was accompanied by Minister of Energy and Mineral Development Syda Bumba and State Minister of Regional Cooperation Amama Mbabazi.
