Chinese Vice-Premier Qian Qichen reiterated in Beijing on November 10 that China will work together with the international community to push for an early settlement of the Mideast issue.

In talks with Mahmoud Abbas, secretary-general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Qian expressed China's deep concern over the Mideast peace process, which, he said, has shown positive signs recently.

Qian offered congratulations for the hard-won agreement between Palestine and Israel on September 5 on implementing the Wye accords by conducting talks on Palestine's final status. Reconciliation between Arabs and Jews and the long-term stability of the region can only be achieved through peaceful negotiations, he noted.

The present moment is a good opportunity for the settlement of the issue, although there's still a long way to go and much to be done, Qian said. Citing an old Chinese saying "Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire," Qian said China has always tried to persuade both parties to understand each other, and proceed with the peace process through joint efforts.

He said China highly appreciates the flexible and practical attitude toward the peace talks shown by the Palestinian National Authority and its efforts to strengthen domestic unity. China was among the first to recognize the PLO and the State of Palestine, and it is an established policy of the Chinese government to actively develop relations with Palestine, he stressed.

Abbas discussed in detail the progress of the peace process since the Madrid peace conference, noting that although the way was arduous, progress has been made through these talks.

He expressed the belief that as long as the two sides show sincerity and continue talks based on UN Security Council resolutions No. 242 and No. 338, a final solution will be found.

He reaffirmed that Palestine will adhere to its strategy of seeking a solution through peace talks, expressing the hope that China and other countries will make efforts in this regard.

Palestine greatly treasures its relations with China, and is grateful for China's long-term support of its just cause, Abbas said. He congratulated the country on the impending return of Macao, and wished for an earlier solution of the Taiwan issue, stressing that Palestine steadfastly supports China's reunification.
