UN Gives US 1 Mln Dlrs to Indian Cyclone Victims

The United Nations system in India has committed some 1 million US dollars for relief measures in cyclone-affected districts of Orissa state, a UN agency said on November 8.

The amount includes over 120 metric tons of relief supplies and 50 tons of high protein biscuits and other items, according to the UN Development Program (UNDP).

Close to 1,700 people have been killed by a strong cyclone on October 29, which affected more than 10.8 million, one third of the state's population.

The central government of India has allocated a total of 189 million dollars for the relief purpose, the UNDP said.
