Foreign Trade Developing Well in Xinjiang

Foreign trade and economic and technological cooperation has been developing well in the Xinjiang Ugyur Autonomous Region in northwest China over the past six years.

Xinjiang's border trade totaled 4.24 billion US dollars between 1992 and 1998, ranking the second in China after Heilongjiang Province in northeast China.

Border trade accounted for half of Xinjiang's total foreign trade over the past six years,

In 1998, border trade volume stood at 870 million dollars, making up 56.7 percent of Xinjiang's total foreign trade.

Xinjiang now has 699 overseas-funded enterprises, nearly 400 of which have been put into operation. By the end of 1998, Xinjiang had used foreign funds totaling 2.38 billion dollars.

The autonomous region has used foreign financing to build highways, irrigation systems and other infrastructure facilities to spur the local economic development.

Meanwhile, Xinjiang also sponsored 594 projects abroad which involved investment totaling 292 million dollars. (Xinhua)
