Li Peng On Supervising Courts

The supervision of courts by people's congresses at all levels will help create a fair judicial system, said top legislator Li Peng at the State College of Judges.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said that the people's congresses and their standing committees have the right to supervise the work of the administrative, judicial, and procuratorate organs of the state.

To further improve supervision, the NPC Standing Committee is deliberating draft regulations on supervising major cases in the judicial process, Li said.

"However, such supervision will not affect the independence of judicial organs," he said.

The State College of Judges was founded in 1997 as a state training center for senior judges in China. In the past two years, 2,300 judges have graduated from the College.
