Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi said on November 4 that all the conflicts can be resolved by heartfelt dialog. The president made the statement at the opening of the All Africa Peace Conference in Kenyan capital Nairobi. It is the reluctance and failure by leaders to pursue dialog in resolving local and regional dispute that deteriorates the situation, Moi pointed out. "In our part of the world, there are many problems, including poverty, boundary disputes and social upheavals, which give rise to conflicts," he said. "But I believe that these can be resolved through the existing frameworks of our regional organizations." Offering Nairobi as a venue for peace talks, Moi reiterated Kenya's stand on politically solving the conflicts between Ethiopia and Eritrea and those in the Sudan, Somalia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kenyan president was awarded a peace prize Thursday by the U.K.- based Life Foundation Africa, the organizer of the peace conference. Since its independence in 1963, Kenya has been an island of peace among the turbulence of wars in Africa. The five-day conference will include workshops, seminars and paper presentations on effective ways to bring about lasting peace in Africa. About 100 delegates from Africa, Europe and America are attending the meeting. |
