Tens of thousands of students from Iranian universities and schools staged a massive rally in front of the former US embassy in Tehran on the morning of November 4, vowing to continue their campaign against the US arrogance. Encouraged by Wednesday's strong-worded speech of the supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the demonstrators burned a dozen of US flags, images of "Uncle Sam" as well as Israeli flags at the rally to mark the 20th anniversary of the takeover of the US embassy in Tehran by Iranian students. Khamenei on Wednesday ruled out the possibility for a resumption of ties between Iran and the US, and termed the campaign against the US arrogance as "an innate part of the Islamic revolution." During the demonstrations, the former Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Mohsen Rezai, blasted the US for interfering in Iran's internal affairs. "It was the US that initiated the confrontation (between Iran and the US) by masterminding a coup to overthrow the Iranian government of Prime Minister Mohammad Masadeq in 1954," said Rezai, Secretary of the powerful State Expediency Council. Before and after the 1979 Islamic revolution, the US has never stopped plots against Iran, he said, even today the US intend to impose western style democracy and freedom on Iran. Referring to the recent call by some US officials for dialog with Iran, Rezai said the US call is aimed at forcing Iran to make a compromise with Israel, drop missile programs and put an end to its support for Palestinian and Lebanese resistance movement. Last month several senior US officials called for "unconditional dialog" between Iran and the US in order to set a road map for the normalization of bilateral relations. The two countries severed their diplomatic ties in 1980 following the occupation of the US embassy. |
