As many as 137 federal servicemen were killed and 354 wounded in the antiterrorist operations in Chechnya, said Russian Defense Ministry on November 3. The Russian armed forces have lost 251 men with 672 wounded since the federal military operations in the North Caucasus began in August this year, said the ministry. About two to five servicemen are getting wounded every day. The number of wounds caused by mine explosions increased during the operation to create security zone in Chechnya, while the losses of the Chechen rebels surpassed 1,500, said the ministry. During the 1994-1996 Chechen campaign, 2,941 Russian servicemen lost their lives and 17,892 were wounded. Among the death, 986 were from Interior troops of the Russian Interior Ministry and 35 from frontier troops. |
