A contract worth 213 million U. S. dollars was inked in Beijing October 31 between China and Bangladesh. According to the contract, the China National Machinery and Equipment Import and Export Corporation (CMEC) will be the undertaker to upgrade the current telecommunication network in the capitals of 58 districts in Bangladesh, which is the biggest telecom project in the country. The CMEC will use seller's export credit to provide Bangladesh with the Chinese-made whole range of telecom equipment, including 189,000 lines of program controlled switchboards, optical cables, and micro-wave transmission facilities.
