FM Spokeswoman Condemns "Taiwan Security Enhancement Act"

The revised version of "the Taiwan Security Enhancement Act" passed by a US House Committee is a gross infringement on Chinese sovereignty, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue at October 28's press conference.

The act, passed by the International Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives, seriously violates the three Sino-U. S. Joint Communiques and interferes in China's internal affairs, said Zhang, venting China's strong indignation at and firm opposition to it.

It needs to be pointed out, she said, that efforts by a small group of US congressmen to get the act passed was actually an attempt to provide a "legal basis" for strengthening US high- tech arms shipment to Taiwan, and for expanding the direct liaison between the two militaries, thus obstructing the cause of reunification of the Chinese people.

This action poses a severe threat to peace of the Taiwan Straits and even the Asia-Pacific Region, said Zhang.

According to Zhang, the Chinese government and people have expressed their vehement condemnation and resolute opposition to the act from the very beginning, and have repeatedly lodged solemn representations to the US side.

China has noted that the United States government opposes passage of the act, she said.

China strongly demands that the US congressmen terminate their erroneous acts of interfering in China's internal affairs by making use of the Taiwan issue, and that the US government strictly abide by the three Sino-US Joint Communiques, honor its commitments, be fully aware of the serious harm of the act, and take effective measures to stop it from becoming law to ensure that no serious harm befalls the Sino-US relationship, the spokeswoman said.
