Sports Hingis out of Grand Slam Cup

¡¡ World number one Martina Hingis was eliminated out of the Grand Slam Cup on October 1 when she lost to American Venus Williams in the semifinals in Munich, Germany.

¡¡ Hingis started badly and despite coming back in the second set she lost the match 6-2, 6-7, 9-7 to the fourth seed Williams, defending champion.

¡¡ In a rematch of their tense semifinal at the US Open which Hingis won, the two women duelled for two hours and 31 minutes before a delighted crowd at Munich's Olympic arena. Williams blasted 18 aces past Hingis who did not have a single ace.

¡¡ "I played good tennis," Williams, ranked number three in the world, was quoted as saying. "It was back and forth the whole way. We both fought hard."

¡¡ In the final Williams will face either her younger sister Serena, the US Open champion, or fellow American Lindsay Davenport. (Xinhua)
