US Urged to Stop Interfering in Other Nations' Internal Affairs

China Saturday urged the United States to stop using the so-called human rights issue to meddle in other countries' internal affairs.

When asked to comment on the section concerning China in the US State Department's annual human rights report, issued Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said that the US government should respect the facts and abide by the norms of international law.

"The Chinese government has always respected the general purpose of promoting and protecting human rights and basic freedom in the United Nations Charter and the relevant international human rights instruments," Zhang said, adding that China has constantly made big efforts in that direction.

"Over the past half century, especially over the past 20 years of reform and opening-up, the Chinese government has made great achievements in improving the people's living standards and human rights status, and the Chinese people are enjoying their rights in political, economic, social and cultural fields," she noted.

"However, without uttering a single word about cases of serious human rights violations in its own country, the US government issued the human rights report directed at other countries, and fabricated unwarranted charges upon another country's human rights conditions and made irresponsible comments about their internal affairs." she added.

"This is a typical example of applying dual standards on the human rights issue," Zhang said.
